In Britain, national parks are referred to as our ‘Breathing Spaces’, many of us enjoy the beauty, the tranquillity and the connection to nature, but how many of us really know of the origins of the national park ideology or the impacts they have had on conservation around the globe; 2014 is a special year to find out more.
For all of us with a love of conservation, national parks and getting outdoors, now is the time to celebrate 150 years since Abraham Lincoln and Congress set aside Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Big Trees “for public resort and recreation…”, in other words to celebrate the first precedent for the national park ideal. Sadly, it is also the 100th year since British born John Muir, the Father Of US National Parks died.
I have spent a lot of time in Yosemite researching and working on how to balance human interaction with the environment and John Muir was the inspiration for me to progress conservation.
